Mittagong Motel's journey

Mittagong Motel identified several key challenges with its operations:

  • high gas bills due to outdated heating systems
  • a lack of electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities which was becoming increasingly important for environmentally-conscious guests
  • a need for a more sustainable approach to energy consumption.

Through the grant, the motel installed modern heat pumps to replace old gas heaters, significantly reducing gas usage and bills.

Separate to the grant, an energy audit identified additional technologies to further reduce their environmental footprint, including setting up an EV charger for guests. This aligned with the motel’s commitment to sustainability and supports the growing number of EV owners.

Accessing the grant

Mittagong Motel learned about the energy efficiency grants through Energywise who helped every step of the way.

Manager of Mittagong Motel, Alex Heath, said the experience was highly positive.

‘The program provided us with valuable resources and guidance, making the transition to more energy-efficient solutions smooth and manageable,’ Alex said.

The installation of the heat pumps has resulted in:

  • significantly reduced gas consumption and bills
  • reduced overall energy use and operating costs
  • less carbon emissions
  • more consistent heating throughout the motel leading to improved comfort for guests and staff.

The EV charger has also been a popular addition to the motel enhancing guests’ experience (noting the EV charger was funded separately to the grant).

Alex said it has given the motel a sense of accomplishment and pride in contributing to a more sustainable future.

‘The EV charger has attracted environmentally conscious guests, enhancing our reputation as a green business,’ Alex said.

Advice for other businesses

Alex encourages other businesses to explore similar opportunities and take proactive steps towards sustainability.

‘I’m grateful for the support we received through the Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises program and Energywise.

‘It has not only helped us reduce our operating costs but also allowed us to contribute positively to the environment,’ Alex said.

Alex’s tips for other businesses:

  • Start by conducting an energy audit to identify areas where you can make improvements.
  • Take advantage of available grants and government programs.
  • Prioritise upgrades that offer both immediate cost savings and long-term benefits.
  • Involve your team in the process and educate them about the importance of energy efficiency.
