A range of energy efficiency training providers and options are available, including accredited training, on-the-job learning, government workshops, and programs offered by professional and industry associations.

Government programs

Cross Industries Skills Training Project  Managed through the National Energy Efficient Buildings Project (NEEBP) by the South Australian Government, delivered on behalf of the former COAG Energy Council.

National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) A national performance-based system that rates buildings on their impact on the environment. The website has information on NABERS assessor training and accreditation.

Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NaTHERS) Rates the energy performance of residential buildings. The website has information on NatHERS assessor training and accreditation.

NSW energy courses and webinars The Energy Saver website offers hands-on experience in energy management for businesses to learn how to implement energy-efficiency projects.

NSW Sustainability Advantage program Open to organisations from the not-for-profit, government and medium-to-large business sectors.

The Basics of Efficient Lighting reference manual  A joint initiative of the Equipment Energy Efficiency Program and the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA).

Victorian Residential Efficiency Scorecard Program The Victorian Scorecard provides a star rating and certificate for existing homes based on their energy efficiency. The website has information on the Victorian Scorecard assessor training and accreditation.

Queensland ecoBiz program Help for businesses to save money on their energy, water and waste bills through sustainability initiatives.

Professional and industry organisations

Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) offers short courses and post-graduate qualifications in energy efficiency and energy auditing.

Australian Power Institute (API) was established by the electricity power industry to support engineers in the power sector. API's bursary program provides support to students.

Carbon Training International (CTI) offers a range of courses to build skills and knowledge in carbon management. 

Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) is Australia’s peak body for energy efficiency, energy management and demand response.

Energy Efficiency Certification Scheme is operated by the EEC for professionals who can lead comprehensive energy retrofits of commercial buildings.

Energy Users Association of Australia (EUAA) holds regular events and workshops on energy markets, pricing and climate change related issues. 

Engineers Australia EA’s Professional Development Program is a platform for engineers to achieve chartered status through career path progression and work-based training. 

Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) rates the sustainability of buildings and communities through the national Green Star rating system. Their information portal contains energy efficiency training resources for industry practitioners and decision-makers.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) develops the capacity of the Australian manufacturing industry and its relevant sectors for innovation and continuous development. There are 6 Energy Efficiency Skill Sets in the MSS11 Sustainability Training Package.

Continuing professional development (CPD)

Australian Passive House Association (APHA) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation which aims to promote Passive House principles as a way of providing superior indoor comfort and air quality while reducing energy use and carbon emissions from Australia’s buildings.  APHA offers two qualifications for Passive House professionals:

Consultant and Certified Passive House Tradesperson

GreenSmart training and accreditation  The Housing Industry Association (HIA) offers online CPD training. The GreenSmart Professional Training Course provides recognised environmental building skills for more sustainable residential design and construction.

Green Building Council of Australia online learning modules GBCA offers video courses designed by industry experts to keep up to date with the latest industry information and meet CPD needs. Topics range from regulatory requirements, innovation and development, to design and social responsibility.

Green Building Institute is a leading education provider for green skills in the building industry and offers online CPD training on a variety of energy efficiency topic areas.
