At the Footscray Community Arts Centre in Footscray, the site includes a heritage listed building and warehouse, and an outdoor amphitheatre and lawn. The site’s annual electricity spend it $27,000 (from an annual usage of 130,000 kWh) plus around $3000 in natural gas cost (from an annual usage of 200,000 MJ). An energy assessment identified this could be reduced by $11,000 per year (39% of annual spent) by implementing the suggested opportunities.
As the winemakers at McLaren Vintners well know, energy is used at every step of the wine making process. Refrigeration is a big energy consumer, making insulation a crucial component in saving both money and energy. An audit found that if McLaren Vintners insulated all of its tanks (currently, 56% of 202 tanks are insulated), they could save over $45,000 a year on their annual electricity costs. The payback period on the outlay is only 4.5 years.
Downs Aluminium Casting is a small, family owned and operated non-ferrous foundry located in Toowoomba, Queensland. The company produces aluminium castings for the construction, power and marine industries. In 2013 it installed a 27kW solar PV system. An audit shows other improvements – including by installing a variable speed drive to the dust extraction system - could improve the company’s energy efficiency.
ABC Castings is a privately owned non-ferrous casting foundry located in Sydney’s Riverwood. It supplies castings to niche markets in mining and rail. Energy assessments showed savings of over 50% could be made by retrofitting existing lighting with light emitting diodes (LEDs) or induction fittings. Not only would this save on energy, but the change would reduce waste, and provide better directional lighting for focused jobs. Installing skylights was also shown to save up to 30% on lighting costs.
At Victoria’s Sunfruit Orchards, 3 of its 4 pumping stations represent 25% of the business’s total electricity consumption. An audit showed that installing a variable speed drive onto the irrigation motor in the orchard, at a one-off capital cost of $3700 would save $1510 a year with a payback period of 2.5 years.
The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), the peak automotive body in Victoria and Tasmania, rolled out the Automotive Energy Information Program in October 2012. The program was designed to identify and promote energy efficiency practices and resources through the distribution of practical information for the industry to reduce costs and adopt energy efficiencies. The Boarding House project at Roselands New South Wales is still in design development stage, and consists of 9 sole occupancy units and a communal lounge. Out of the 9 units, 6 are proposed to be two storey structures, with a mezzanine bedroom. The 3 remaining units and communal lounge room are proposed to be single storey structures. The project is a class 3 building under the NCC, located at Roselands, inner western Sydney which falls in NCC Climate Zone 5.
