At Hidden Valley, 1.5 hours out of Townsville, rising diesel prices prompted this accommodation provider to improve their businesses energy efficiency. This case study details some of their actions, including changing traditional light bulbs for energy-saving compact fluorescents, and replacing fridges with more energy-efficient models.
Golden North is a manufacturer of premium ice cream and frozen yoghurt. Its South Australian facility at Laura consumes 6930 gigajoules (GJ) of electricity per annum, about 75% of which is used by the refrigeration plant. Energy assessment identified numerous areas for savings through energy efficiency improvements, including replacing inefficient compressors with a single crew compressor (and using variable speed drives to ensure it runs efficiently); installation of hot water exchangers for oil cooling and installing variable speed fans.
The owners of Bendigo’s The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery & Café regularly review the businesses energy practices. This factsheet details a number of changes made in the last few years, which included:
- installing energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)
- a timer on the baking oven
- zoning the bakery’s lighting
These changes, and others detailed in this factsheet, have meant that despite the business growing 10% in recent years, energy costs have remained stable. A cost saving of $2000 per annum.
At the McIvor Road Vet Clinic in Victoria, an increase in demand for its services led to installation of new equipment. Energy bills went ‘through the roof’, and service demands meant switching equipment off was not an option. Instead, the Clinic installed additional insulation and a 10kW solar PV system, switched from halogen to light emitting diodes (LEDs), and installed a solar boosted, gas hot water system. Within 12 months, the Clinic’s energy use has been cut by 50%, saving $5000 per annum.
Brisbane’s Manly Hotel was able to save 873,188 MJ of energy (a $20,000 saving for the business) by focusing on energy efficiency. This case study highlights where savings were made: most came through the installation of energy-efficient equipment, including power factor correction equipment; upgrades to air conditioners and televisions and replacing halogen globes with light emitting diodes (LEDs). The business also reduced hot water temperatures by 10°C.
Major’s SUPA IGA has served its community for more than 100 years. The owners have implemented numerous energy efficiency measures including airlocking the store entrance - creating a thermal barrier, by installing a second door, reduces air exchange between external and internal areas of the store, and cuts the heating, cooling and refrigeration load. As a result of the recommendations from an energy assessment, Bendigo Access Employment has been reducing energy use across all sites. Measures implemented have included:
- turning off PAs/amplifiers/data projectors located in class rooms, training rooms and meeting rooms when not in use
- increasing the ICT server room temperature from 16 to 18°C
- removing staff personal heaters
Located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliott Island Eco Resort has done extensive work reducing its energy consumption. Changes have yielded a 3.5 year payback, and saved $270,000 a year in fuel costs. This factsheet explains many of the resort’s initiatives, including its work promoting energy efficiency to guests.
The Glebe Point youth hostel in Sydney has saved $960 a year through moving to more efficient lighting options. Actions have includes replacing rooftop para floods with compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) flood lights; replacing 50 watt (W) down lights with 35W IRC halogen down lights; installation of fluorescent T5 conversion kits across the property; and replacing electric clothes dryers with gas units.
Energy efficiency improvements at the Mackay based Cape Hillsborough Nature Resort have led to savings of over $30,000 a year (including savings made through waste and water management). This family-owned business has – amongst other changes – replaced its six gas-fired hot water systems with four heat pump systems, changed all lighting to energy efficient globes, and installed sensor lights where practical.
