How much you can get

Eligible Victorian households can get $250 in bill relief.

Who can get it

To get the bill relief in Victoria you must have an eligible concession.

Please note: You must be the electricity account holder for your principal place of residence to receive the bill relief. If you are eligible and are not named on the bill for your household but you pay for electricity, contact your electricity provider to add your name to the account.

Your household can only receive one bill relief credit in each financial year, even if more than one eligible person lives in the household.

Eligible concession cards and payments for existing state concessions and energy bill relief

  • Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Gold Cards
  • Health Care Cards (including Low Income Health Care Card)
  • Pensioner Concession Card

If you held one of these concessions cards you may be eligible for an existing Victorian electricity concession scheme. If you already get a Victorian electricity concession scheme on 1 August 2023 you will also automatically get the bill relief payment.

To find out more about Victorian electricity concessions go to the Victorian Government website.

Services Australia concessions eligible for energy bill relief

If you were eligible for one of these concession cards or payment on 31 July 2023, you will be contacted directly by Services Australia in September 2023 to tell you what you need to do.

  • Carer Allowance
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Family Tax Benefit A and/or B

DVA cards eligible for energy bill relief

If you have one of these cards on 31 July 2023, visit the Victorian Government website for more information.

  • DVA Gold Cards (Dependent)

How to get it

In most cases your electricity provider will automatically apply the bill relief to your electricity account to reduce the amount you owe on your next bill.

How and when this happens depends on your situation.

If you already get help from your state government

If you already get a Victorian electricity concession, you don’t need to do anything. You will start getting the bill relief from 1 July 2023.

If you are eligible for help from your state government but do not currently get it

If you think you are eligible for a Victorian electricity concession but aren’t getting it, you should contact your electricity retailer to register. You will then also get the new bill relief from 1 July 2023.

To find out more go to the Victorian Government website.

If you have an eligible card or get a payment from Services Australia

If you aren’t already eligible for a Victorian electricity concession, but you have one of the eligible concessions from Services Australia on 31 July 2023, you will be contacted directly by Services Australia in September 2023 to tell you what you need to do.

If you have an eligible card from DVA

If you aren’t already eligible for existing Victorian electricity bill concession schemes, but you have an eligible DVA card on 31 July 2023 please contact your electricity provider from now up until 31 June 2024 to apply. They will ask you for your Unique Identification Number (UIN) or Veteran File Number and consent for them as the provider to check your eligibility for bill relief.

If you live in an embedded network

If you live in an embedded network and your household is eligible for the bill relief, you will not automatically receive bill relief but will be able to access a direct payment through your state or territory government.

Typically, you live in an embedded network if you get your electricity from your strata or landlord in a caravan park, apartment building or retirement home or village.

If you live in a household that receives energy bills, but you don’t have a direct relationship with the retailer (e.g. you are a tenant or subletter in a sharehouse) you don’t necessarily live in an embedded network.

To find out more about how to apply go to the Victorian Energy Compare website.

When you will get it

If you already receive a concession from your state government, your energy retailer will automatically apply the first instalment of $125 to your account in August; you do not need to provide any further information.  A second and final instalment of $125 will be applied to your account in February 2024.

If you aren’t already eligible for a Victorian electricity concession, but you have one of the eligible concessions from Services Australia on 31 July 2023 you will be contacted by Services Australia in September and asked to lodge your consent through an online workflow. Once your consent has been lodged, your retailer will start to apply the single payment of $250 from November.

If you are an embedded network customer you will need to visit the Victorian Energy Compare website and submit an application. Eligible applicants should receive the bill relief payment as a single payment of $250.
