Golden North is a manufacturer of premium ice cream and frozen yoghurt. Its South Australian facility at Laura consumes 6930 gigajoules (GJ) of electricity per annum, about 75% of which is used by the refrigeration plant. Energy assessment identified numerous areas for savings through energy efficiency improvements, including replacing inefficient compressors with a single crew compressor (and using variable speed drives to ensure it runs efficiently); installation of hot water exchangers for oil cooling and installing variable speed fans.
This is a guide on how to effectively develop an energy-mass balance (EMB), a method for accounting for the energy and material flows for a commercial building and its processes. It was designed for corporations to meet the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program but can used by any large energy user.
This case study presents Iluka Resources Limited’s successful adoption of the energy-mass balance (EMB) as the core method of energy analysis in its Synthetic Rutile facility in Iluka’s South West Operations, Western Australia. It discusses key aspects of Iluka’s experience, such as the EMB modelling approach, results achieved, lessons learned and the role the EMB will play in Iluka’s energy improvement initiatives. The case study was developed through Iluka’s participation in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program.
This guide outlines the key considerations for the development of an energy-mass balance (EMB), a method for accounting for the energy and material flows, within a mining site. It was designed for corporations to meet the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program but can used by any large energy user as a guide on how to effectively develop an EMB.

Evaluation of whether the new 5-star standard was achieving its goals as analysed in the 2006 Regulatory Impact Statement.
Case study prepared by Team Catalyst showing how the design of a shopping centre in Maitland, NSW, might change if the building had been designed to comply with the 2019 version of the energy efficiency provisions in Section J of Volume 1 of the National Construction Code, rather than the 2016 version. The case study uses the Greenstar verification method (JV2) newly added to the 2019 version of Section J. The case study was completed in early 2018 using an early draft version of Section J 2019 and does not fully reflect the final version published in February 2019.
In April 2016, the Australian Government and the Tasmanian Government established this study of the feasibility of a second electricity interconnector (2IC) between Tasmania and Victoria. The study was initiated in response to energy supply challenges in Tasmania during 2015–16 caused by an extended outage of Basslink combined with low hydro water storage levels resulting from low rainfall.
The ‘Achieving Low Energy Existing Commercial Buildings in Australia’ Report was commissioned to consider policy options for the COAG Energy Council’s Trajectory for Low Energy Buildings.
This document details roles and skills required to undertake, report on and implement the findings of rigorous energy efficiency assessments for large energy users. It is the result of research primarily based around the assessment requirements of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program. The findings also have relevance for companies participating in state government energy assessment programs and other companies wishing to improve their energy efficiency performance.
This report identifies specifications, performance levels and prices for products typically used in new non-residential construction, giving a good snapshot of the industry as it operates, in line with the requirements of the 2019 National Construction Code.
The Green Lease Handbook complements the Tenant's Guide and contains more detailed legal and technical information.
These Green Lease Schedule forms and templates are for the use of government organisations.
At Northcote’s Café Koula, changing the lighting has led to changing the atmosphere in the busy café. Compact fluorescents replaced 105 watt metal halides, giving an equivalent light while using less energy, and improving light in the café’s work areas. A produce garden is popular with families, and waste is fed to local chickens or in a retrofitted worm farm. Financially, the business has saved $140 a year electricity and maintenance costs, while reducing its greenhouse emissions.
