Table O of the Australian Energy Statistics has been updated to include the latest data available on Australia’s electricity generation. This release provides estimates for 2017-18 and calendar year 2018.
Total electricity generation in Australia was estimated to be 261,405 gigawatt hours (GWh) in calendar year 2018.
Fossil fuel sources contributed 212,066 GWh (81 per cent) of total electricity generation in 2018, a decrease of 3 per cent compared with 2017.
Coal accounted for the majority of electricity generation, at 60 per cent of total generation in 2018.
Renewable sources contributed 49,339 GWh (19 per cent) of total electricity generation in 2018, an increase of 25 per cent compared with 2017.
The largest source of renewable generation was hydro (7 per cent of total generation) followed by wind (6 per cent) and solar (5 per cent).
These statistics cover all electricity generation in Australia, including by power plants and by businesses and households for their own use.
