Testing fuel consumption in the real world

The Australian Government is providing $14 million to the Australian Automobile Association over the next 4 years to test the real-world fuel usage of a range of popular cars, SUVs and utes sold in nationwide.

The vehicles are tested in real traffic on urban and rural roads as well as a motorway. The test results will better inform buyers about the true cost of running particular vehicles.

The first round of testing found that 3 vehicles produced higher noxious emissions on the road than would be permitted in the applicable laboratory tests for Australian regulated pollutants.

These first tests were conducted in August using strict protocols developed in consultation with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and industry.
