Supporting reliable, secure and affordable energy for the Daintree

The Australian Government is supporting more reliable, secure and affordable energy for North Queensland communities through the development of a Daintree microgrid.

Microgrids are small-scale electricity systems. The Daintree facility will be a renewable energy microgrid, incorporating an 8 MW solar farm, 20 MWh of battery storage and a 1 MW green hydrogen plant. It will be a valuable demonstration of solar to hydrogen technology.

The government is investing $18.75 million over 3 years for Volt Advisory Group to develop the facility. The grant is being delivered under the Daintree Microgrid Program, following a feasibility study completed under the $50 million Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund.

Switching to renewable sources of energy will displace over 4 million litres of diesel currently consumed each year—an important consideration for this World Heritage listed environment. The microgrid will provide reliable, secure and affordable energy for the area and create 200 jobs.

The project is due to start this year and the microgrid is due to be operating by 2024.
