The University of NSW will investigate the response of rooftop solar and distributed energy resources (DER) to events across the National Electricity Market (NEM). ARENA has announced $981,000 in funding to the UNSW towards the $2.1m project.
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and solar monitoring company Solar Analytics are also partnering on the project. AEMO’s Renewable Integration Study has identified that high penetration of rooftop solar presents challenges to power system security.
The UNSW study will examine how rooftop solar and DER respond to contingencies such as the sudden loss of a large generator or transmission line. The project will assess opportunities for solar and DER assets to protect the NEM from such events in the future.
The study will:
- improve data capture
- assess inverter behavior
- inform development of new standards
- set up frameworks for long-term monitoring of solar and DER asset behaviour.
- provide AEMO with new tools to operate a safe, secure and reliable power system with high levels of rooftop solar in the grid.
