Solar farm boosts energy for remote Rottnest Island

Renewable energy now accounts for around 45% of Rottnest Island’s energy production, with a solar farm now working in tandem with the island’s wind turbine and diesel generators.

The 600KW solar farm has eased the Western Australia island’s dependency on diesel fuel, for an estimated annual saving of $225,000. Before the solar farm, Rottnest’s annual power of 5GWh came exclusively from seven diesel generators and the wind turbine.

‘Rottnest Island is an isolated community and is totally reliant upon its own resources for the supply of energy and water for visitors,’ WA Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said.
