The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is calling for feedback on simplifying energy bills so householders and small businesses can better understand them and potentially find a better deal.
AEMC has published a consultation paper on a rule change request from the Hon Angus Taylor MP, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction.
The proposal is for the rule change to contain objective and outcome-based principles for energy bills. This would underpin a new mandatory Australian Energy Regulator (AER) guideline for electricity and gas retailers, with requirements on the content and format of bills.
It’s also proposed that requirements should be in place for how bills are delivered to householders and small businesses.
The AEMC is seeking feedback on the issues customers face in understanding their energy bills, the benefits and challenges of the proposed rule change, and alternative solutions.
Submissions are due by 22 October 2020. See the AEMC website for further information.
