Have your say on energy payment difficulty protections

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has opened consultation for a review of payment difficulty protections in the National Energy Customer Framework (NECF).

The NECF is a suite of legal instruments that regulate the sale and supply of electricity and gas to retail customers.

The review seeks to ensure that consumers experiencing payment difficulty are proactively identified, engaged early and supported appropriately.

The AER has released an issues paper for consultation. It seeks feedback on:

  • the effectiveness of existing protections for consumers experiencing payment difficulty
  • opportunities to strengthen protections for consumers experiencing payment difficulty
  • the benefits and limitations of other frameworks and approaches
  • the costs and benefits of potential changes to the framework.

The AER invites all interested stakeholders to provide feedback by 28 June 2024.
