Government ensuring better, simpler energy bills

Simplified electricity and gas bills will soon be mandatory and consistent. The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has delivered a final rule to make complex energy bills a thing of the past.

The rule sets out the purpose of an energy bill. It will enable small customers to easily understand payment amounts, dates and methods.

The Hon Angus Taylor, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, said the improved clarity will help customers better understand their energy use.

‘Simpler, clearer and standardised information particularly about energy costs and usage is crucial to help customers manage their bills,’ the Minister said.

‘Ensuring everyone has clear and accurate information will also empower consumers to compare offers and deals available from other energy retailers. This is an important measure to help households and businesses pay less for their energy, and builds on a 9.2% drop in CPI retail electricity costs over the last year.’
