The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will play a key role in the development and delivery of the German-Australian Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Incubator known as HyGATE.
The objective of HyGATE is to strengthen Australian-German cooperation in the implementation of a value chain for hydrogen and stimulate the innovation process in both countries.
The Hon Angus Taylor MP, Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction, said, ‘Our partnership with Germany through the HyGATE project will accelerate the development of Australia’s hydrogen industry and will create new jobs and economic opportunities on the path to net zero.’
The Australia-Germany Hydrogen Accord, executed by the two countries, builds on respective strengths. Australia aims to be a major hydrogen exporter while Germany holds expertise in hydrogen technology with plans to import significant quantities of hydrogen.
Australia and Germany have committed up to AU$50 million and €50 million, respectively, to invest in renewable hydrogen projects.
The HyGATE funding initiative will advance and support the goals of the Australian Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap and ARENA’s strategic priority of commercialising clean hydrogen.
Further details will be released closer to the opening of the funding initiative.
