Australia’s first zero emissions aquatic centre

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced up to $1.53 million in funding towards Australia’s first zero emissions indoor leisure and aquatic centre in Melbourne’s west.

The Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre will install an integrated renewable energy system within a newly constructed, high-efficiency building.

Installations will include:

  • a 88 kilolitre above-ground thermal energy storage system
  • 500 kW of solar PV
  • a heat recovery system
  • direct digital control systems.

Any additional electricity the facility requires will come from a 100% renewable energy power purchase agreement.

The centre will be designed to achieve a ‘6 Star Green Star’ rating. The building and energy system are expected to deliver an energy reduction of more than 80% compared to aquatic centres.

The $8.1 million integrated system will demonstrate renewable energy solutions that are feasible for local governments and businesses.
