Analysis of small business retail energy bills

23 October 2017

The Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Retail Tariff Tracking Project was established by Energy Consumers Australia (ECA) in April 2016. The project tracks and analyses the energy costs faced by SMEs, by collecting information on electricity and gas retail pricing offers available from all major retailers.

Energy Consumers Australia consulted widely with stakeholders in the development of the analysis, including consumer advocates, business organisations, distribution network businesses, retailers, the Australian Energy Market Commission, and the Australian Energy Regulator.

Initial analysis is now available in the ECA’s preliminary report. Significant increases were seen in SME’s typical annual electricity bills: South Australia (33%), NSW (31%), the ACT (25%), Queensland (22%) and Western Australia (13%). Victoria’s retail prices will next be reset on 1 January 2018.
