Market bodies

Energy Ministers are supported by 4 key market bodies:

  • The Australian Energy Market Commission develops the rules by which the market must operate.
  • The Australian Energy Market Operator handles the day-to-day operations of the electricity and gas markets.
  • The Australian Energy Regulator enforces the national electricity market rules and makes judgements on the regulatory proposals of monopoly network operators.
  • The Energy Security Board provides a whole-of-system oversight on energy security, reliability and affordability in the National Energy Market and facilitates better planning, co-ordination and action between governments, Energy Ministers and market bodies.

Energy Ministers are also supported by Energy Consumers Australia who are the national voice for residential and small business energy consumers.
