Government priorities

The Australian Government is taking action across the economy to deliver a reliable, secure and affordable energy system with improved outcomes for energy consumers which meets Australia’s international commitments.

These are the three pillars of our Energy Policy Framework, which sets out clear objectives and detailed policies to ensure a better energy future for Australia.

The government is already implementing key aspects of this Framework.

We are delivering reforms to put downward pressure on electricity and gas prices and ensure our markets are well-regulated and transparent. We are encouraging new reliable supply and technology. We are investing in new ways to make our energy system cleaner and more efficient.

Looking forward, we will continue to build on our comprehensive plan to ensure Australian households, businesses and industries get a fair deal on energy.

The Department of the Environment and Energy works closely with the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Energy Council, and energy market bodies such as the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC); the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO); and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). Together they oversee and regulate Australia’s National Energy Market (NEM), one of the largest interconnected power systems in the world. They also have responsibilities for the National (east, north and west) Gas Markets.
