This figure shows Australian energy production by fuel type in petajoules from 1977–78 to 2017–18. Domestic production of primary energy increased by 4 per cent in 2017–18, to reach 18,603 petajoules. Coal accounted for more than two-thirds of Australia’s energy production in 2017-18, followed by natural gas.
