This figure shows Australian energy consumption, by fuel type in petajoules from 1977–78 to 2017–18. Energy consumption rose by 0.9 % in 2017–18 to reach 6,172 PJ. This compares with average growth of 0.6 % a year over the past 10 years. Fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) accounted for 94 % of Australia’s primary energy mix in 2017–18.
